2009 Camp Kick Off

It’s the first week of camp 2009, and it’s been a HOT one! The temperature yesterday and today was over 90, and very humid. This kind of weather is great for waterfront activities like swimming and kayaking, but not so great for the “land” activities like sports and games and tennis! We’ve had several required all-camp swims to get the kids cooled off in the afternoons and evenings.

The theme this week is Holidaze week, and we’ve celebrated a different holiday each day. The staff has worked really hard each night to decorate the dining hall, taking down one set of decorations each night and putting up the next set. They’ve also tried to plan evening activities and dinners around the theme of the week.

Sunday was Valentine’s Day at camp and we had cupcakes with candy hearts for dessert. On Monday it was St. Patrick’s Day, and most of camp wore green all day. Monday night was also cookout night, and we cooked hotdogs and s’mores over the fire. Tuesday we celebrated Easter with an Easter Egg Hunt (also known as the “Dice Game”). You can check out some of the photos at www.flickr.com/photos/tannadoonah.  We also had Easter Eggs at breakfast, and a great Easter dinner with Ham and Cheesy Potatoes.

Today we celebrated the Fourth of July, and had a picnic on the front lawn with fried chicken, roasted corn on the cob, and a delicious flag cake. Dinner was followed by an exciting game of Capture the Flag, and then an all camp free swim to cool down.

We have a big group of campers this week (87 of them!), and a fantastic staff, so I’m thinking the rest of the week will be just as good as the first half has been!
